Fort Clinch State Park is a historic fort
Fort Clinch State Park is a historic Florida fort located on a peninsula near the northern point of Amelia Island, along the Amelia River. The park features over 1,100 acres of land with a 19th-century fort and a diverse ecosystem of maritime hammock, tidal marsh, and sand dunes.
Fort Clinch was built in the early nineteenth century as part of the Third System of seacoast defenses. It is a pentagonal-shaped brick fort that served as a haven for blockade runners during the Civil War. Although briefly occupied by the Confederate Army, the fort was recaptured by Federal troops in early 1862. This gave the Union control of the coasts of Florida and Georgia.
